In the storied history of Texas, the six flags that have flown over its lands serve as powerful symbols of the State’s rich and diverse history. Between the years 1845 and 1861, and again from 1865 to the present day, Texas has flown the flag of the United States of America as its fifth flag. The other flags flown over Texas include the flag of Spain (1519-1685; 1690-1821), the flag of Mexico (1685-1690), the flag of the Republic of Texas (1836-1845), and the flag of the Confederate States of America (1861-1865).

The adoption of the Stars and Stripes as Texas’ fifth flag reflects the State’s deep ties to the nation and its role as an integral part of the American fabric.
