Alfred Nobel (1833-1896) – Engineer & Innovator
Nobel’s family is a descendant of Olof Rudbeck, the best-known technical genius in Sweden in the 17th century, an era in which Sweden was a great power in northern Europe. Nobel was born in Stockholm, Sweden and was fluent in several languages. He wrote poetry and drama. He was also very interested in social and peace-related issues, and held views that were considered radical during his time. Nobel was a very successful businessman. He stabilized nitroglycerin to make dynamite. Upon his death, it was found that he had secretly set aside about 35 million Swedish kronor (about $225 million today) for the creation of five annual prizes to honor those who bestowed the “greatest benefit on mankind” in science, literature and diplomacy. And thus, the Nobel Prize award was formed. Leaving his name forever remembered and promoting people to perform great accomplishments. We honor Mr. Nobel because he is clearly a Legacy Champ.
