The Yellow Rose of Texas
“”The Yellow Rose of Texas” is arguably the most famous song about Texas, and it was inspired by a real person. Emily West was a free African-American servant that was allegedly kidnapped by Santa Ana’s army on April 16, 1836, and forced to accompany the Mexican army to the Battle of San Jacinto. After the Mexicans defeat, stories began to circulate that Emily helped the Texan cause by distracting General Santa Anna while the Texans attacked.”
