Texas History & Lore: Etiquette for Flying the Texas Flag

February 18, 2025 by Stephen A. Mendel, Estate Planning Attorney

HONORING THE LONE STAR: How long should a flagpole or staff be in comparison to a Texas flag when one is flying the Lone Star flag?

In the heart of Texas, the Lone Star flag stands tall as a symbol of pride, heritage, and independence. Yet, with the emblematic honor comes a responsibility to uphold proper flag etiquette. Whether displayed on a flagpole or used in a parade, the Texas flag deserves to be treated with reverence and respect.

First and foremost, it’s essential to understand some general guidelines. No flag should ever fly above the U.S. or State of Texas flag. This simple rule reflects the importance of honoring both our state and nation equally. If a flag cannot be displayed in adherence to this rule, it’s best to ground and remove it from the pole, or not display it at all.

Now, let’s delve into the specific rules governing the use of the Texas Flag. When it comes to flying the Texas flag outdoors, it should always be on a flagpole or staff being at least 2 ½ times as long as the flag itself. This ensures that the flag can be seen and respected from a distance, embodying the spirit of Texas for all to admire.

Timing is also crucial. The flag should not be unfurled outdoors earlier than sunrise or left unfurled after sunset. Additionally, the flag should not be left exposed to inclement weather conditions. These considerations ensure that the flag remains in pristine condition, symbolizing the strength and resilience of the Lone Star State.

Special occasions call for special recognition. Whether it’s State Memorial Days or historical events, the Texas flag should be proudly displayed as a mark of respect and remembrance. Every school in Texas is expected to fly the flag on regular school days, honoring the legacy and values it represents.

When hoisted, the Texas flag should always be done briskly and unfurled slowly with appropriate ceremonies. When displayed on motor vehicles or floats in parades, the flag should be securely attached to a staff, ensuring it is presented with dignity and pride.

Respectful usage extends beyond physical display. The Texas flag should never be used as part of a costume or uniform, nor should it be embroidered, printed, or used in any form of advertising. It should always be treated with the utmost care and reverence, reflecting the honor and respect it commands.

As we honor the Lone Star and all it represents, let us also consider the importance of honoring our own legacies. Just as we uphold traditions for the Texas flag, thoughtful estate planning ensures that your values and wishes endure for generations to come. To uphold your traditions, contact the Mendel Law Firm at www.mendellawfirm.com, for personal estate planning assistance.
