Texas History & Lore: Flying High in Texas Football History

September 24, 2024 by Stephen A. Mendel, Estate Planning Attorney

RAY MORRISON: The SMU coach who created the Ponies Aerial Circus in the 1920s.

Back in the roaring 1920s, Southern Methodist University (SMU) football wasn’t just about touchdowns and tackles; it was about the Ponies Aerial Circus. The visionary coach responsible for this airborne spectacle and groundbreaking passing strategy was none other than Ray Morrison. Morrison revolutionized the game, introducing daring aerial plays that had the Ponies soaring through the air, capturing the hearts of football enthusiasts across Texas. His coaching acumen and the success of the “aerial circus” led the SMU Mustangs to secure three Southwest Conference championships in 1923, 1926, and 1931. The Ponies Aerial Circus became a symbol of innovation in Texas football, proving that in the Lone Star State, even the sky is not the limit.

Morrison’s coaching innovations extended beyond offensive tactics. He is credited with inventing the “Statue of Liberty” play, a deceptive maneuver that has since become a staple in football playbooks. Additionally, he introduced the concept of the five-man defensive line, showcasing his versatility and forward-thinking approach to the game.

Beyond his coaching achievements, Morrison played a pivotal role in the development of SMU’s athletic infrastructure. He was instrumental in the construction of SMU’s Ownby Stadium. Morrison’s impact on college football extended beyond his tenure at SMU, he coached at various institutions, including Vanderbilt University (1918, 1935 – 1939), Temple University (1940 – 1948), and Austin College (1949 – 1952), leaving an enduring legacy in each program.

In recognition of his exceptional contributions to the sport, Ray Morrison was inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in 1963. His innovative coaching techniques, commitment to excellence, and pioneering spirit continue to inspire football enthusiasts and contribute to the rich history of the game.

As you marvel at the captivating legacy of Ray Morrison and the Ponies Aerial Circus, consider reaching out to Mendel Law Firm at www.mendellawfirm.com.
