Texas History & Lore: The Quest for Control

May 6, 2025 by Stephen A. Mendel, Estate Planning Attorney

LA SALLE’S FRENCH SETTLEMENT:

In the late 1680s, a wave of urgency swept through Spanish officials, prompting them to launch a series of 11 expeditions into the area that later became part of the State of Texas. This fervent activity was ignited by the unexpected establishment of Fort Saint Louis by the French explorer La Salle on the Texas coast.

La Salle’s expedition had aimed for the mouth of the Mississippi River but instead landed on the Texas coast, where he established Fort Saint Louis in 1685. This French settlement posed a direct challenge to Spanish claims in the region, sparking fears of encroachment and loss of control. Determined to reaffirm their dominance and protect their territories, the Spanish embarked on these expeditions with a sense of urgency and resolve. Fort Saint Louis, situated near present-day Victoria, Texas, became a symbol of French ambition and a catalyst for Spanish action.

The Spanish expeditions were led by notable figures such as Alonso De León, who played a crucial role in the efforts to locate and eradicate the French presence. De León’s expeditions in 1689 and 1690 were particularly significant, as they eventually led to the discovery of the ruins of Fort Saint Louis, which had already been abandoned and destroyed by local indigenous groups. The Spanish dismantled what was left of the fort and buried the cannons to ensure it could not be used again.

The establishment of Fort Saint Louis by the French was a significant threat because it not only challenged Spanish territorial claims but also disrupted Spain’s strategic plans for the region. Spain feared that France’s presence would attract other European powers and indigenous alliances, undermining Spain’s control over the Gulf Coast and interior regions. This fear was justified, as the fort’s location provided a potential launching point for further French expansion.

The expeditions launched by the Spanish in response to Fort Saint Louis were not solely military ventures. There were also efforts to establish missions and settlements that would solidify Spanish presence and influence among the indigenous populations. These missions aimed to convert local Indian tribes to Christianity, create loyal subjects, and integrate them into the colonial economy.

This historical episode underscores the intense rivalries and strategic maneuvers that shaped the early history of Texas. The competition between European powers for control of North America was a driving force behind much of the exploration and colonization during this period. Spain’s expeditions into Texas in the late 1680s reflect a broader context of geopolitical conflict and ambition that defined the colonial era.

As we reflect on the French and Spanish struggles for control and legacy, it’s a reminder of the importance of securing our own legacies for the future. For personalized guidance on legacy planning, contact the estate planning attorneys of the Mendel Law Firm at www.mendallawfirm.com.
