ZZ Top, the iconic American rock band, was formed in Houston, Texas, in 1969. The band became renowned for its unique blend of blues and rock, characterized by Billy Gibbons’ distinctive guitar style and the solid rhythm section of bassist Dusty Hill and drummer Frank Beard. For 51 years, ZZ Top consisted of these three core members until Hill’s passing in 2021.
Billy Gibbons, the band’s lead vocalist and guitarist, is celebrated for his blues-infused guitar playing. Frank Beard, the drummer, despite his surname, was the only member without a beard. Dusty Hill, the bassist and vocalist, along with Gibbons, became famous for their matching long beards, sunglasses, and hats. This distinctive look became a signature part of their public image.
Over the decades, ZZ Top released 15 studio albums and sold an estimated 50 million records worldwide. They earned three MTV Video Music Awards and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004. Rolling Stone ranked Billy Gibbons the 32nd-greatest guitarist of all time in 2015. Known for their energetic live performances and witty lyrics, ZZ Top left an indelible mark on the music industry.
