The Importance of Estate Planning for Younger Adults

March 7, 2023 by Emily J. Wyatt

Estate planning is not just for older people.  In the eyes of the law, anyone over the age of eighteen years of age is an adult. Thus, estate planning is important for all adults over the age of eighteen years. In fact, younger adults may have more to lose if they don’t have an estate plan in place. We cannot control the future, but we should plan for it. Here are some reasons why estate planning is especially important for young adults:

  1. Protect Your Assets. Even if you don’t have a lot of assets now, you may have more assets in the future. Proper estate planning can help protect your assets and ensure that they’re distributed according to your wishes. It’s important to have a plan in place in case something unexpected happens.
  2. Designate Guardianship for Dependents. If you have young children or other dependents, estate planning allows you to designate a guardian for them. This ensures that they’re taken care of in the event that something happens to you.
  3. Plan for Medical Care.  Estate planning also includes healthcare planning, such as creating a living will or naming a healthcare proxy. This ensures that a trusted person of your choosing determines what medical treatments are carried out if you’re unable to make decisions for yourself.
  4. Avoid Family Conflicts. Estate planning can also help avoid family conflicts. By creating a solid estate plan, you can ensure that your wishes are clear and that there’s no confusion about how your assets should be distributed.
  5. Minimize Taxes. Estate planning can also help you minimize your tax liability and ensure that your beneficiaries receive the most from your estate. An estate planning attorney can help you set up trusts or advise regarding other strategies to help minimize your tax burden.

Overall, estate planning is an important part of preparing for the future, regardless of your age. As a young adult, it’s especially important to start planning early and make sure your wishes are clear. An estate planning attorney can help guide you through the process and ensure that your assets are protected and distributed according to your wishes.
