October 6, 2015 by Stephen A. Mendel, Estate Planning Attorney

The Brownsville Affair, or the Brownsville Raid, was a racial incident in 1906 that arose out of tensions between the black soldiers of the 25TH Infantry and the white citizens in Brownsville, Texas. Although commanders said the soldiers had been in their barracks all night, evidence was planted … [Read more...] about Texas History – Do You Know Where the 25th Infantry Riot Occurred?

What’s in an Obituary?

September 23, 2015 by Stephen A. Mendel, Estate Planning Attorney

We have all read at least one obituary in our lives and many of us have had to write one. Most obituaries follow an unspoken format, but not all. The recent obituary for Mississippi resident Antonia “Toni” Larroux is an example of how an obituary can truly be more than just a somber look back at someone’s life. Toni Larroux died in April of this year. Her obituary, written by her two surviving children, has captured national attention for its tongue-and-cheek approach to what is typically a … [Read more...] about What’s in an Obituary?

Texas History – Do You Know What Texas Town Was Once the Confederate Capital of the State of Missouri?

September 22, 2015 by Stephen A. Mendel, Estate Planning Attorney

Marshall, Texas was founded in 1841 as the seat of Harrison County. Marshall quickly became a major city in the state because of its position as a gateway to Texas on several major state coach lines and one of the first railroad lines into Texas. The county had the highest per capita farms and plantations in the south. Local citizens were opposed to the growing wealth and power of the industrial and financial capitalists and centralist tendencies of the Northeast.
