Thirteen (13). The Atakapa (1), Caddo (2) and Kadohadacho (3) tribes occupied the southeastern region. Wichita (4) and Tonkawa (5) tribes roamed the prairies in central Texas. The Karankawa (6) and Coahuiltecan (7) Indians lived along the southern coastal area and the south Texas plains to the Rio Grande. The Lipan Apache (8), Jumano (9) and Tigua (10) roamed the Southwestern portions of the state. The Kiowa (11), Kiowa Apache (12), and Comanche(13) tribes occupied what is now called the Texas Panhandle to as far south as the San Angelo area.
