Gail Borden Jr. sought a patent for processing condensed milk in a vacuum in 1853, but it was 1856 before he received British and American patents. When the Civil War brought intensified demand for such milk, his company experienced an upsurge in sales that assured success. Millions are indebted to this Texan for taking the “bite” out of their coffee.
