Gus Baumgarten, a baker, invented the oven thermostat which regulates heat for baking. He became involved in a project to utilize cottonseed meal for baking. However, when government agents came to see his progress, they became more intrigued with the thermostat he had developed. As a result, they prescribed that all ovens made in the United States were to include a thermostat to regulate heat.
