The hurricane that occurred at Galveston on September 8, 1900 was the greatest natural disaster in the United States at that time. From one to five feet of water covered the entire island at the height of the storm. An estimated 6,000 to 8,000 persons were declared missing or dead and an additional 2,000 perished elsewhere along the coast. Texas History – When were the First Traffic Laws Passed in Texas?

1907. According to the 1992-93 Texas Almanac, a few automobiles were in use by 1900. By 1907 there were enough motorized vehicles on the roads that the first traffic laws were passed, limiting speeds to 18 mph and requiring that autos stop when meeting horse-drawn vehicles. Each vehicle had to be registered in the owner’s home county. America's most purchased and favorite food, the hamburger, was invented by a Texan. The hamburger got its start in the Henderson County town of Athens in the 1880s. Fletcher Davis served up a meat patty topped with mustard, a pickle, and onions, between two slices of bread.
